Engagement Through the Disciplines
It is our pleasure to invite you to the sixth annual Outreach Scholarship conference, October 8-10, 2006, in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s conference, Engagement Through the Disciplines, offers an opportunity to explore unique approaches to community-academic scholarly outreach through the discipline lens.
Just minutes away from the Ohio State campus, the conference facility is located in downtown Columbus. “The Columbus” is just steps from the Ohio Statehouse, minutes from the sites of innovative university-community partnerships, and in the heart of a growing urban community.
We are excited that on October 7 and 8, The Ohio State University will also be hosting, through its Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities, the national conference, Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life. A consortium of colleges and universities, Imagining America’s theme will be “Engaging Through Place” (www.ia.umich.edu). On Sunday, October 8, the Imagining America and Outreach Scholarship conferences will have shared programming, giving you an opportunity to participate in both conference’s sessions, exhibits, and discussions.
It brings us great pride to have The Ohio State University hosting the Outreach Scholarship 2006 conference. On behalf of each of the sponsoring institutions, we hope you will join us in Columbus for this outstanding opportunity to share and to learn.
Who should attend?
This conference is for faculty, staff, deans, administrators, and students from any type of higher education institution wanting to learn more about the scholarship of university-community partnerships. Conference Objectives
The Outreach Scholarship 2006 conference is designed to engage participants on several levels. For those new to the idea of the scholarship of engagement, the conference will help shape an understanding of the concept by providing several relevant examples. For those already grounded in their understanding of the definition and practice of the scholarship of engagement, the conference will further the national dialogue about:
- the scholarship of engagement as an integral and enriching component of faculty and university work,
- the relationship of the scholarship of engagement to other components of faculty and university work (in particular teaching and research),
- research on the scholarship of engagement, and
- the role of universities as "engaged institutions" in twenty-first century society.
Six Reasons to Attend Outreach Scholarship 2006
Engagement Through the Disciplines will be one of the professional highlights of your year:
1. Engaging conference format. With over 60 concurrent sessions, over 40 poster presentations, and exceptional presenters encompassing all aspects of engagement, this year’s conference will expand your knowledge and resources for engaging your institution and community. The conference will feature a technology showcase demonstrating how the latest technology can be used as tools in developing, delivering, and documenting outreach and engagement.
2. Sessions to help institutionalize engagement. Deans, college administrators, and faculty leaders can join colleagues in a number of featured sessions focused on embedding engagement in academic departments. You will have the opportunity to dialogue with deans and department chairs who have integrated engagement into their units and supported a faculty committed to outreach scholarship.
3. Learn the latest information to support outreach programming. Come learn what your colleagues are doing to transform our world through positive collaborations between higher education and our communities.
4. Experience partnerships! Experience WOSU@COSI at the Sunday reception, the Drexel Theatre at the Gateway by the Ohio State campus on Monday evening, and sessions in the community on Monday. These are all unique partnerships between the university and community partners that are resulting in innovative efforts that benefit both the university and the community.
5. Networking. This conference gives participants the opportunity to network with experienced faculty, staff, and students in public service and outreach and engagement arenas from all over the nation. As we share Sunday’s programming with Imagining America, attendees at both conferences will have an opportunity to interact with a diverse array of faculty and citizens involved in partnerships among the spectrum of university disciplines and occurring in places throughout the community.
6. Experience a vibrant downtown Columbus. Columbus is a progressive, growing city with a vibrant cultural community, innovative businesses, and one of the top research universities in the country. The downtown community is experiencing rejuvenation with expanding art performances and exhibits, increased downtown housing development, and fabulous restaurants. Come and enjoy.
