Supporting a 21st Century Engaged University
At Ohio State, outreach and engagement is defined as—
meaningful and mutually beneficial collaborations with partners outside the academic community. This may include partners such as those in education, business, and public and social service. Outreach and engagement is—
- That aspect of teaching that enables learning beyond the campus walls
- That aspect of research that makes what we discover useful beyond the academic community
- That aspect of service that directly benefits the public
Embedding outreach and engagement into University units is the primary focus of the Office of University Outreach and Engagement. Integrating this work into the teaching, research, and service of academic and support units has made it a part of Ohio State’s culture. When we implement community partnerships and embed them into units, we enrich both our campus and the communities we serve.
Nominations Sought for Outreach and Engagement Awards
Outreach and engagement partnerships are being sought to serve as Ohio State University’s nominee for the national C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award. To nominate a partnership, submit a 500-word abstract by December 18, 2009. See the Outreach and Engagement Awards page for details.
National Recognition for Ohio State’s Engagement
The Ohio State University has won recognition by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for both community outreach efforts and for community-engaged curriculum. The university is one of 68 public and 51 private institutions that received the “community-engaged” classification. Ohio State’s designation is in the category “Curricular Engagement and Outreach & Partnerships,” which identifies institutions with substantial commitments in both areas. Read more -->
